PARTNERS' PRESENTATIONS
SPAIN
Due to the
relatively high unemployment certain number of people who live in
the neighborhood are compelled to seek and earn a living abroad
and thus some of our students live with their grandparents which implies some
emotional issues. That's why taking part in such a project will make our
students feel Europe closer, see our continent as an united community and
themselves, their parents and their families as a small part of that community.
Also our students almost never have the opportunity to travel abroad and such a
project will allow them to get in touch with foreign cultures, make friends
there and thus enrich their lives.
CEIP Salamanca from Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Coordinator: Mrs. Reyes San Martín Cruz
Our school is located in the city peripheries. It is made
up of 15 teachers and about 220 students. It is an Infant and Primary School so
we have students from 3 until 12 years old. The families´ socio cultural level
is middle-low class and we sometimes do not have the necessary families support
to carry out many activities developed in our school. Unemployment has become
one of the main problems in this area and that is reflected in our students´
academic outcomes due to the lack necessary equipment, in most of the cases.
In recent years, Tenerife has received a large number of
immigrants from Latin America and consequently we have in our school a
considerable number of students from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Russian,
Chinese, Romanian, Brazilian students. In this sense, our students are very
conscious about an education for equality, accepting each different culture and
showing interest in learning about new ways of life.
Our school is daily used to deal with digital equipment and
all our classrooms are equipped with projectors controlled by individual laptops.
We reinforce our students the ICT teaching and learning.

POLAND
We are a state lower secondary school in Starachowice. Our
town is located halfway between Poland's two biggest cities - Warsaw and
Cracow, in a region of one of the oldest mountains in Europe,
Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Holy Cross Mountains). Our school has got 241
pupils, aged 13-15, and 32 teachers. The school is located in the newest
district of our town and it is combined with a kindergarten, a primary school
and a modern sports hall. Our students are very good at sports, especially
basketball and volleyball. We have classes that specialize in sports and
classes for students with special needs. Our pupils learn three languages -
English, German and recently Russian, although English is the leading one.
Majority of our students come from underprivileged
families, where low pay or unemployment is rapidly becoming a barrier hindering
their ability to fully take advantage of social, cultural and educational
resources and preventing young people from accessing higher education
altogether. Some years ago our town was home to the largest truck manufacture
in the country which was the driving force behind town's economy, not only
providing employment to the residents, but also supporting many other nearby
businesses. Sadly, with the demise of the industry most of its workers found
themselves in a desperate financial situation, which had a direct effect on
young people's functioning, perspectives, basic living skills and
competence.
Therefore, our teaching process concentrates on equalizing
educational opportunities. The school offers a wide range of obligatory and
optional classes encouraging students to develop their interests and abilities.
We attach a lot of weight to teaching and learning foreign languages, seeing it
as a key to integration between different nations and cultures.
